The Black Pearl, an appropriation of pop culture icon is a bit of poetic justice of sorts. The Black Pearl (of PotC lore) is the resurrected ship, The Wicked Wench, which was resurrected via a faustian deal with Davy Jones, and rechristened the Black Pearl. Seems like a cursed name, even if it’s fictional reasoning.
Also, there’s a book by Scott o’Dell, The Black Pearl, that also links bad fortune with finding “the pearl of heaven”.
Good luck with that ship, Bozos, you’re gonna need it.
