Interesting paper, I find it odd that during the 14 hour penetration only 3 hours was during the storm phase and the other 11 hours was recovery phase.

By penetrating so deeply how much energy gets delivered to the lithosphere rather than the ionsphere, acting to ease geomagnetic storm conditions and return the earth system to stability?

Why does the penetration persist after the main hit and storm conditions? It really strikes me as a sort of coupling acting to dump charge from the ionosphere and persisting until the system has returned to equilibrium.

Finally, how much energy would these penetrations be transferring if the impact was 100x the strength? How terrifying does this penetrating behavior become in a truly massive blast?

Going a little further, with something of an actual question.

In an extreme enough blast to compress L-shells and cause a discharge like in the magnetar animation do you think these penetrating fields would become the discharge pathway it would follow to the surface?
